Strengthening Micro Cooperatives Through the CDA Region 10’s Conduct of Virtual Mandatory Training

The Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) Region 10 successfully conducted a series of virtual mandatory training aimed at maximizing opportunity for enhanced understanding of cooperative principles, governance, and management through the attendance of one hundred ten (110) micro cooperatives of Region 10. Pursuant to CDA Memorandum Circular No. 2015-09 entitled Revised Guidelines Implementing the New Training Requirements of Cooperative Officers, trainings were held in two separate virtual sessions, “Fundamentals of Cooperative” on September 17, 2024, and “Cooperative Governance and Management” on September 18, 2024.

On Day 1, Ms. Mary Grace D. Vapor facilitated the three hundred fifty-five (355) participants from across the region who attended the first session. The first resource speaker, Ms. Lovella L. Velasco, covered the History, Principles, and Values of Cooperatives. She was also able to discuss further the types, categories, and distinct features of cooperatives against other organizations. In the afternoon, Ms. Juhna A. Balundo discussed the Articles of Cooperation, By-laws, and CDA powers, functions, and responsibilities. She then tackled cooperative planning, formulation, and important cooperative policies.

The second day, as facilitated by Mr. Nizar R. Pangalian, focused on governance principles and practices, as well as the operation and management of cooperatives. Four hundred twenty-one (421) participants from the micro cooperatives in the region joined the session and learned about the powers and functions of cooperative officers. Ms. Juhna A. Balundo gave a thorough discussion on governance issues, expounding elements, principles, and the cooperative’s structure thereby stressing the cooperative officers’ functions and responsibilities. In the afternoon session, Ms. Gilda A. Kempis probed the strategies in guiding the cooperatives in their operation; topics discussed were General Assembly or Board Resolutions, Policy/Manual, Programs/Projects, and CDA reportorial requirements.

Overall, the training sessions organized by CDA Region 10 were a huge success, providing participants with valuable knowledge and skills that will help them better lead their micro cooperatives and drive the growth and success of their cooperatives. The CDA Region 10 training sessions serve as a testament to the commitment of the cooperative sector in promoting a culture of learning and development among cooperative officers.
