12-day Study Field Training on Coco Production: A Success
The Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) Region 12 successfully conducted a 12-day Study Field Training of Trainers (TOT) on Coconut Production and By-Product Processing from September 16 to 27 at the Amparitas Integrated Farm in Tagasaka, Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur. There were 41 cooperative officers and members from various coconut farmers cooperatives who attended the said activity. The training aimed to strengthen the technical and entrepreneurial capacities of coconut farmer cooperatives through the application of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) to support sustainable and value-adding enterprises.
Throughout the activity, participants faced challenges such as long travel time and transportation difficulties due to the remote location of the venue, limited processing equipment, differences in technical knowledge, and concerns in accessing stable markets for processed coconut products. Despite these limitations, the training was highly successful, providing participants with hands-on experience in processing various coconut-based products such as virgin coconut oil, coco sugar, and coco amino.
The training created a significant impact by empowering cooperative representatives to develop new livelihood ventures, enhance product quality, and increase members’ income opportunities. CDA Region 12 recommends continued technical assistance, stronger market linkages, and improved logistical arrangements for future activities.
Further research may explore product innovation, market feasibility, and cooperative value-chain integration.
Key insight: Continuous training enhances cooperative resilience, innovation, and rural economic growth.
