Coconut farmers are the backbone of the Philippines’ agricultural economy, but their dedication to the land often comes with a hidden challenge: a lack ofΒ financial literacy. While they are experts at cultivating coconuts, many struggle to manage their finances, making it difficult to budget, invest, and grow their cooperative. This lack of financial knowledge most often than not, can lead to poor decision-making.
To address this challenge, 60 coconut farmers from 17 different cooperatives underwent a three-day training program on simple bookkeeping for non-accountants. The event was held from September 3-5, 2025, at the Panda Tea Garden Suites in Tagbilaran City, Bohol. With resource speakers from the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA), the farmers were taught foundational financial concepts. They learned how to use a simple ledger to track transactions, and they applied these skills to real-world scenarios, learning to monitor their income and expenses. The training provided a clear, accessible path to financial stability, emphasizing that sound bookkeeping doesn’t require complex softwareβjust a pen, a notebook, and a willingness to learn.

The training went beyond teaching basic accounting. Resource speakers from the CDA emphasized that accurate record-keeping is not just a regulatory requirement but a vital tool for sustainable growth. Proper bookkeeping allows cooperatives to track profitability, secure institutional loans, and identify opportunities for expansion. The hands-on exercises and open Q&A sessions ensuredΒ that every participant left with a solid understanding of how to apply the lessons to their unique cooperative. By the end of the program, the farmers were not only equipped with new skills but also with a new sense of control over their financial future.
This training program aids in providing communities with the skills and knowledge to create sustainable income streams. By investing in financial literacy, the CDA is building a more resilient and economically empowered communityβone ledger entry at a time. (jrb)
