In line with the nationwide observance of Cooperative Month 2025, the Local Government Unit of Kananga, in partnership with the Kananga Municipal Cooperative Development Council, successfully launched the kick-off celebration on October 10, 2025. The event stood as a testament to the enduring values of cooperation, solidarity, and resilience that define the cooperatives of Kananga. The day began with a vibrant motorcade from border to border, participated in by various cooperatives across the municipality. Decorated vehicles and colorful banners proudly carried messages of this year’s Cooperative Month theme, creating a festive spirit that highlighted both unity and pride among members.
Following the motorcade, participants gathered at the PAGCOR Building for the formal opening program. Distinguished guests graced the occasion, including Hon. Manuel Silva, Brgy. Captain; Mr. Manuel P. Tan, Jr., Cooperative Development Officer Designate; and Ms. Gerlen L. Lagrosa, Cooperative Development Specialist II of CDA Region VIII, who delivered their inspiring messages of support. They emphasized the vital role of cooperatives in fostering economic growth, livelihood opportunities, and community empowerment. The event was smoothly facilitated by Ms. Julie Ann Marie Silva Lauchengco, DTI Representative, who served as the Master of Ceremonies. However, just before the formal program could commence, an earthquake unexpectedly struck, momentarily disrupting the activities. While the incident caused brief tension, participants calmly evacuated to open spaces for safety. After proper checks and assurance of safety, the program resumed. This experience became a meaningful reminder of the strength and resilience of the Kananga cooperatives – proving that even amid unforeseen challenges, the cooperative spirit prevails.
Despite the disruption, the celebration continued with solidarity messages, sharing of best practices, success stories, and innovative initiatives presented by Lamac MPC, Fatima MPC, PACCI, and OCCCI. These testimonies showcased the invaluable contributions of cooperatives in uplifting lives and communities. In addition to the kick-off program, a series of Cooperative Month-long activities were organized to further enrich the celebration and provide meaningful engagements for cooperative members. These include the Mandatory Training on the Fundamentals of Cooperatives held on October 16–17, 2025, and the Mandatory Training on Cooperative Management and Governance scheduled for October 23–24, 2025. The observance will then culminate on October 24, 2025, with a festive fellowship program showcasing cooperative talent presentations, along with the awarding and recognition of participating cooperatives and partner agencies.
The Cooperative Month Celebration Kick-Off in Kananga, Leyte was more than just a festive gathering – it was a powerful demonstration of community spirit and resilience. The decision to push through despite the earthquake underscored the very essence of cooperativism: standing strong together in times of trial and moving forward with shared goals and unwavering hope.
