Region 10 Opening Salvo in Celebration of 2023 Cooperative Month

The spirit of cooperativism is once again celebrated in Region 10 as the Cooperative Development Authority 10 (CDA-10, Regional Cooperative Development Council 10 (RCDC-10), City Cooperative Development Council of Cagayan de Oro (CCDC-CDO), Provincial Cooperative Development Council of Misamis Oriental, and Provincial Cooperative Office – Misamis Oriental joined hand in hand to celebrate the much-anticipated Cooperative Month. The theme for the 2023 celebration echoes the resilience and pioneering spirit of cooperatives: “Cooperatives: Pioneering the Path to Recovery Amidst Modern Challenges of Climate Change and Food Security.”

On October 1, 2023, the region began the month of vibrant festivities dedicated to recognizing the invaluable contributions of cooperatives in our society with a grand parade. A total of one hundred twenty-five (125) cooperatives and local government partners enthusiastically joined the parade which started from the JR Borja- Burgos Street part of the Rio de Oro Boulevard, and ended at the Misamis Oriental Provincial Capitol Grounds in Cagayan de Oro City.

Following the parade and acknowledgment of all participating cooperatives, everyone gathered for a solemn Holy Mass, offering prayers and blessings for the success and continued growth of the cooperative movement. Right after the mass was the opening program with Engr. Deal Noel Benegrado, Chairperson of RCDC 10 who gave his welcome message. The solidarity message was given by the Governor of Misamis Oriental, Hon. Peter M. Unabia, who underscored the importance of cooperative efforts in the development of the region and the support from local government units. Another message of solidarity was given by City Councilor Roger Abaday on behalf of Hon. Rolando A. Uy, Mayor of Cagayan de Oro City, who also showed his commitment and highlighted the significance of cooperation and unity.

An empowering message from Hon. Imee Rose P. Moreno, Chairperson of the Committee on Cooperatives of Cagayan de Oro City, had resonated through her words when she said that “one can’t hardly do it, but together, we can” emphasizing the essence and power of cooperativism. Also present to deliver a message of support was Atty. Michelle Anayron, Chairperson of the Committee on Cooperatives of the Province of Misamis Oriental who reiterated the seven principles of cooperativism.

Ms. Marissa B. Catubig, the Supervising CDS of CDA Region 10 on behalf of Director Aminoden A. Elias delivered her keynote address where she thanked the strong support and commitment of the cooperative movement of the region and the overwhelming support from the local government units. The Provincial Cooperative Officer of Misamis Oriental, Mr. Alberto B. Acain and the Officer-in-Charge of Cagayan de Oro City’s Community Improvement Division, Mr. Honorio G. Diputado, Jr also showed their support during the opening salvo.

The celebration continued with the presentation and sashing of the candidates for Mr. and Ms. Cooperative 2023. This glamorous competition served not only as a source of entertainment but also as a platform to advocate the cooperative values of unity, leadership, and commitment. Meanwhile, cooperatives also had the chance to display their products during the cooperative trade fair. It was an impressive demonstration of our cooperative spirit amidst these modern challenges of our society.

The event concluded with the closing message from Mr. Edgardo A. Micayabas, the Chairperson of CCDC-CDO and Chief Executive Officer of First Community Cooperative. His words of gratitude and encouragement inspired participants to continue their cooperative journey with renewed enthusiasm.

The kick-off celebration of National Cooperative Month 2023 in Region 10 was a true sight of unity, purpose, and celebration. As the month unfolds, cooperatives across the nation will continue their efforts to pioneer the path to recovery amidst the modern challenges of climate change and food security. Together, they stand as beacons of hope, proving that by working together, communities can thrive even in the face of adversity. Here’s to a month of cooperation, progress, and a brighter future for all!
