CDA recognizes co-op performers, leaders in Benguet

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet, June 19 (PIA) – Cooperatives play a vital role in propelling economic development in the countryside and the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) has recognized leading cooperatives and cooperative leaders in the province.

CDA-Cordillera Regional Director Franco Bawang, Jr. said the Gawad Parangal Search for Outstanding Coop, now on its second year of implementation, gives due recognition to cooperatives with good performance and cooperative leaders who have contributed to development and whose examples are worth emulating.

Results of the evaluation and assessment of nominees to the 2013 Gawad Parangal Awards under the different categories are as follows: large – Philex Mining Community Credit Cooperative; medium – Benguet State University Multi-Purpose Cooperative (MPC); small – Thanksgiving MPC; and micro – Immaculate Conception Community MPC.

Nominees were categorized based on net worth as per Magna Carta for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). For micro, it should not be more than P3,000,000; small – more than P3,000,000 to P15,000,000; medium – more than P15,000,000 to P100,000,000, and large- more than P100,000,000.

Miguel Luma-ang, a cooperative advocate who currently chairs the Cooperative Bank of Benguet, Inc. and Manager of the Buyagan Operators and Drivers Association MPC, was adjudged as cooperative leader for the province.

The ad hoc committee chaired by the CDA with members from the Benguet Provincial Cooperative Development Council recommended the endorsement of Luma-ang to the regional level competitions.

Unfortunately for the cooperatives, they were not able to meet regional level endorsement as they have not garnered the required accumulated points as per CDA criteria.

Bawang said that among the criteria for cooperatives were the organizational development and management, financial management and business operation, social relevance, and awards and recognition received with specific indicators underscored.

Criteria for cooperative leader include performance and contribution to cooperative development, award and citations received for the last five years, and longevity of service to cooperatives.

Bawang said that due recognition will be accorded in fitting rites during the celebration of cooperative month on October.

He said that they are still working out for possible monetary awards to be given to awardees.

He added that the award is also a means of promoting cooperatives and cooperativism among communities.(JDP/SCA- PIA-CAR,Benguet)#
