In the pursuit of agricultural sustainability and enhanced productivity, the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN), through the Office of the Provincial Agriculture (OPAg) in coordination with the Cooperative Development Authority has taken a significant step by providing livelihood assistance to seven cooperatives in the form of inorganic fertilizers (14-14-14, 16-20-0, 21-0,0). This initiative is a crucial intervention aimed at boosting the agricultural output of these cooperatives, which play a pivotal role in supporting the livelihoods of farmers and their communities. By supplying essential agricultural inputs, the assistance is not only addressing the immediate needs of these cooperatives but also laying the foundation for long-term economic growth in the province.
A total of 471 sacks were awarded last July 30 and August 2, 2024 respectively at the Ilocos Norte Agriculture & Fisheries Extension Center (INAFEC) led by OIC Provincial Agriculturist, Engr. Ma Teresa Bacnat and staff, which was also witnessed by CDA Ilocos Norte Cooperatives Development Specialist II, Rosievic R. Medina and Richard T. Gacisan, and likewise the designated/appointed Local Cooperative Development Officer of the cooperatives’ jurisdiction.
For the seven cooperatives namely: Balatong Multipurpose Cooperative, Dampig Small Coconut and Rice Farmers MPC, Eastern Small Coconut Farmers MPC, Saranay VintarMPC, Camguidan MPC, Paninaan MPC and Upon MPC, the benefits are manifold. First and foremost, access to inorganic fertilizer allows farmers to optimize their agricultural practices, resulting in healthier crops and higher productivity. This, in turn, translates to increased income for cooperative members, enabling them to reinvest in their farms, support their families, and contribute to the local economy. Moreover, the use of inorganic fertilizer can help mitigate the challenges posed by climate variability and soil degradation, ensuring that agricultural production remains resilient in the face of environmental uncertainties.
Prior to the awarding of the said assistance, a thorough assessment and validation was done by the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte – Office of the Provincial Agriculture together with CDA Ilocos Norte PCDS Rosievic R. Medina. (Richard T.Gacisan, CDS II)
