Courtesy Visit to Siargao Islands: Strengthening Cooperative Development

In a significant step towards fostering cooperative growth and development, our esteemed Regional Director Monatao Honeya R. Alawi, recently took a courtesy visit to the three municipal mayors in the picturesque Siargao Islands. This visit underscores the commitment of our regional office to collaborate closely with local government units (LGUs) in promoting the cooperative movement, which can potentially transform the region’s socio-economic landscape.

During her visit, the Regional Director engaged in productive dialogues with the mayor of San Isidro, Hon Lamberto Domiños, Jr., General Luna – Hon. Sol Matugas, and Dapa – Hon Abeth Matugas by providing an in-depth overview of the current developments and importance of cooperatives. She highlighted the pivotal role of cooperatives in driving inclusive economic growth, enhancing community resilience, and improving the overall quality of life for the residents.

One key point the Regional Director emphasized was the importance of appointing dedicated Cooperative Development Officers (CDOs) within each municipality. She articulated that CDOs are crucial in ensuring that cooperatives receive the necessary support and guidance to thrive. These officers would serve as the vital link between the local government and the cooperatives, facilitating capacity-building initiatives, providing technical assistance, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. She brings out that having a CDO in place would not only enhance the operational efficiency of cooperatives but also attract more individuals and groups to consider forming cooperatives, thereby expanding the cooperative network within the Siargao Islands.

The mayors expressed their appreciation for the insights shared and demonstrated a keen interest in supporting the cooperative movement. They acknowledged the transformative potential of cooperatives in empowering local communities, generating employment, and fostering economic independence. In response, the Regional Director assured the mayors of the continued support and collaboration from the regional office to ensure the successful implementation of cooperative programs and initiatives.

This visit marks a significant milestone in strengthening the partnership between the regional office and the LGUs in the Siargao Islands. It is a testament to our unwavering commitment to advancing the cooperative movement and harnessing its potential to bring about positive change in the lives of the people.

As we move forward, we remain dedicated to supporting the establishment of CDOs in every municipality, providing continuous training, and resources to cooperatives issuing certification for qualified CDOs, and fostering an environment where cooperatives can flourish. Together, we can build a stronger, more resilient, and economically empowered Siargao Islands through the cooperative movement.
