Celebrating Cooperative Spirit: The 2nd MIMAROPA Regional Cooperative Congress

From October 9 to 11, 2023, the Citystate Asturias Hotel in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, served as the vibrant backdrop for the 2nd MIMAROPA Regional Cooperative Congress, part of the annual Cooperative Month Celebration organized by the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) MIMAROPA. This event gathered cooperative members, local leaders, and guests to celebrate achievements, foster collaboration, and empower participants with knowledge.

Day 1: A Colorful Beginning

The first day began with the arrival of participants and guests at 8:00 AM, as the hotel buzzed with excitement. Attendees registered and received their conference kits, each filled with essential materials for the upcoming sessions. By noon, the venue was filled with representatives from various cooperatives, all eager to engage in meaningful discussions.

 

 

At 1:30 PM, the Parade of Colors kicked off, showcasing the vibrant banners of participating cooperatives. The Puerto Princesa Choir set the tone with a stirring Convocation, followed by the National Anthem, which united everyone in a moment of pride. They performed the PPC March and the Palawan March, each note echoing the spirit of cooperation and solidarity among attendees.

As the celebrations continued, Mr. Jerson Manahan, the original singer of the MIMAROPA Cooperative Hymn, led a collective singing that resonated through the hall, strengthening the cooperative spirit among participants. The Cooperative Pledge, delivered by Ms. Adelfa Hornilla, PCDO of Occidental Mindoro, echoed the commitment to the cooperative movement.

Ms. Eva Loraine R. Cataje, Sr. CDS of CRITS, recognized participants and guests, highlighting the contributions of those present. The Welcome Address by Hon. Victorino Dennis M. Socrates, the Governor of Palawan which was represented by her Executive Assistant Atty. Camille Awat, emphasized the importance of cooperatives in regional development and community empowerment.

Mr. Alberto A. Sabarias, the new Regional Director of CDA MIMAROPA, then delivered Opening Remarks that set a collaborative tone for the congress. Following this, Ms. Gina S. Socrates introduced the keynote speaker, USec. Joseph B. Encabo, CDA Chairperson. His Keynote Address inspired attendees to strive for excellence in their cooperative endeavors and reinforced the value of unity within the cooperative movement.

The afternoon included an Installation Ceremony, where Mr. Sabarias was formally inducted as the new Regional Director of CDA MIMAROPA. The oath was officiated by USec. Encabo, symbolizing a new chapter in leadership for the region. The Banwa Dancers captivated the audience with a lively Production Number, celebrating the cultural heritage of the region and adding an element of festivity to the proceedings.

Solidarity messages from various officials followed, with ASec. Abdusalam Guinomla, ASec. Virgilio Lazaga, and ASec. Vergel Hilario sharing their support and insights on cooperative initiatives.

After a brief Food Break, Dr. Romeo A. Valdez, MIMAROPA RCDC Chairperson, presented the MIMAROPA RCDC Milestone, offering glimpses into the achievements of the first MIMAROPA Cooperative Congress and an overview of the second. This session concluded with the Official Opening of the Congress, marking the beginning of an inspiring and productive event.

The day concluded with a delightful dinner at Baywalk, Puerto Princesa City, where participants continued discussions against the backdrop of the setting sun. The emcee for the opening of this very memorable congress, Ms. Mary Vhalerie F. Guzman, ensured the festivities continued seamlessly.

Day 2: Knowledge and Competition

The second day began promptly at 8:00 AM with Morning Rituals, including an invocation and a social activity designed to foster camaraderie. Following this, a Conference Overview set the stage for the day’s learning.

At 9:00 AM, Dr. Erlinda Ganapin, Chairperson of the PSU MPC, led a thought-provoking Topic Discussion on “Leadership in Cooperative Organizations.” Her insights encouraged attendees to reflect on their leadership styles and the importance of effective governance in cooperatives.

After a Health Break at 10:00 AM, the focus shifted to the Salient Provisions of RA 11765, the Financial Products and Services Consumer Protection Act (2022). Ms. Jo Ann Gamboa, Chief of Supervision and Examination – CSF, provided crucial information on consumer protection, emphasizing the responsibilities of cooperatives in safeguarding their members.

After a satisfying Lunch Break, the afternoon was dedicated to a spirited Quiz Bee Competition that engaged participants in friendly rivalry, testing their knowledge of cooperative principles and laws. This interactive segment fostered teamwork and camaraderie, with participants cheering for one another. Emceed by Ms. Fatima A. Casaul, attendees enjoyed a day filled with entertainment, laughter, and shared experiences, further strengthening the bonds formed throughout the congress.

As evening approached, the congress transitioned to a festive atmosphere with Dinner followed by Coop Night.

Coop Night: A Celebration of Talent and Tradition

As the sun set on the second day of the 2nd MIMAROPA Regional Cooperative Congress, the atmosphere at the Citystate Asturias Hotel transformed into one of excitement and camaraderie for the highly anticipated Coop Night. This event was not just a celebration but a vibrant showcase of talent, creativity, and cooperative spirit, drawing participants from across the region.

Opening Ceremony

The evening began with a moment of reflection led by Mr. Mark Manrique, Ms. Nelcy Dimatulac, and dedicated CDA employees, who offered a heartfelt Prayer to set a positive tone for the festivities.

Mr. Alberto A. Sabarias, the newly appointed Regional Director of CDA MIMAROPA, then delivered the Opening Remarks, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and collaboration in driving community development. His words resonated with the audience, igniting a sense of unity among participants.

Ms. Gina Socrates, PCDO of Palawan, followed with Welcome Remarks, warmly greeting everyone and inviting them to fully engage in the evening’s activities.

The Mr. and Ms. Cooperative Contest

The highlight of the evening was the Mr. and Ms. Cooperative MIMAROPA Opening segment, where participants donned traditional attire, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the region. The emcee, with great enthusiasm, introduced the contestants and announced the Best in Traditional Wear, celebrating those who embraced their roots with elegance.

Next, Ms. Faith Valenzuela from the CCCDO took the stage to introduce the judges for the Mr. and Ms. Cooperative contest. The criteria for judging were presented, ensuring transparency and excitement as contestants prepared to showcase their talents.

Tugsayawit Performances

The night continued with vibrant performances from the Tugsayawit group. Between each segment, intermission numbers by Jerson Manahan and members of the MNHS Employees Multipurpose Cooperative entertained the audience, setting an upbeat atmosphere.

The Floral Attire competition followed, where contestants donned beautiful floral ensembles. Again, the emcee announced the Best in Floral Attire, delighting the audience with creativity and artistry.

Talent Showcases

The talent portion of the evening was a spectacular display, featuring seven contestants each showcasing their unique skills. From singing to dancing, the variety of talents brought cheers and applause from the audience. The Tugsayawit performers interspersed these acts, ensuring the energy remained high.

After the talent showcase, participants transitioned into the Corporate Attire segment. Contestants strutted down the stage, and the emcee awarded the Best in Corporate Attire, highlighting the professionalism within the cooperative community.

Awards and Recognition

As the evening progressed, Archie Del Mundo from Oriental Mindoro captivated the crowd with another intermission number, enhancing the celebratory vibe

The emcees then announced the Top 3 contestants for both the Mr. and Ms. Cooperative contest, leading to an engaging Q&A session where finalists answered questions posed by the judges.

Recognition and awarding were handled by Ms. Eva Loraine Cataje and Mr. Jefhtee Panganiban, who expressed appreciation for all participants’ hard work. The Awarding of Winners for both the Tugsayawit performances and the Mr. and Ms. Cooperative contest was a moment of triumph, with cheers echoing through the hall as each winner was celebrated.

Closing Remarks

As the event drew to a close, Dr. Romeo A. Valdez, the RCDC Chairperson, delivered Closing Remarks, reflecting on the unity and creativity displayed throughout the night. He encouraged all participants to carry the cooperative spirit into their communities, reinforcing the evening’s theme of collaboration and support.

The emcees, Leila Bingco and Cyrus Kim Claridad, wrapped up the night with gratitude for everyone’s participation, leaving attendees inspired and connected as they looked forward to the next congress.

A Night to Remember

Coop Night was not just an event; it was a heartfelt celebration of the cooperative movement, showcasing the talents and spirit of the MIMAROPA region. Participants left the event with cherished memories, new friendships, and a renewed commitment to their cooperatives, eager to contribute to the growth and success of their communities.

Day 3: Reflection and Transition

The final day began at 8:00 AM with Morning Rituals, including an invocation and social activities that helped participants reflect on the previous days’ experiences. This set the stage for the Privilege Hour, where representatives from the cooperative sector and CDA shared updates and insights on cooperative initiatives.

A Plenary Session, presided over by Dr. Romeo A. Valdez and moderated by Atty. Richard E. Ilagan, provided a platform for open discussions. Participants voiced their thoughts on cooperative development, ensuring that everyone’s voice was heard in shaping the future of the sector.

At 11:00 AM, the Transfer of the Basket of Responsibility took place, with the Province of Occidental Mindoro volunteering to host the next MIMAROPA Cooperative Congress. Their readiness and enthusiasm were evident, inspiring confidence in their ability to carry forward the cooperative spirit into the future.

Dr. Valdez’s closing remarks emphasized the importance of continuing the momentum generated during the event, inspiring participants to take action within their cooperatives.

The congress wrapped up with a final recognition of all participants and the impact of their contributions. The concurrent Trade Fair, showcasing various cooperative products, highlighted the creativity and entrepreneurship of MIMAROPA’s cooperative members, reinforcing the congress’s goals of collaboration and development.

As participants left the congress, they were filled with new knowledge, renewed passion, and a strong network of colleagues, ready to make a positive impact in their communities through the cooperative movement. The celebration of Cooperative Month through this congress not only honored past achievements but also paved the way for a collaborative and thriving future in the cooperative sector.
