From July 14 to July 20, 2024, Dream Paradise Mountain Resort in Romblon, Romblon, served as the backdrop for an intensive week dedicated to cooperative development. Despite the remote location, the week was marked by strategic planning, practical training, and significant local support aimed at bolstering the cooperative sector in the province.
The journey began on Day 0, July 14, when Acting Regional Director Alberto Sabarias, Ms. Eva Loraine Cataje, Senior Cooperative Development Specialist, and Ms. Helen S. Servaňez, CDS II-Romblon, arrived in Romblon. Their mission was clear: to engage with local cooperatives and enhance their development through the CFIDP Year 3 program. The team’s arrival set the stage for a week of focused activities and collaborative efforts.
On Day 1, July 15, the program officially commenced with a pivotal meeting at the Romblon Provincial Cooperative Development Council. Provincial Governor Hon. Jose Riano presided over the gathering, which was crucial for setting the agenda for the week’s activities. During the meeting, Governor Riano made a noteworthy announcement—a pledge of 2 million pesos to support the CSF Cooperative. This significant financial commitment underscored his administration’s dedication to strengthening local cooperative enterprises. The meeting also covered key topics, including training provisions, the CDO (Certificate of Development Outcomes) certification program, and CDC compliance for recognition. The enthusiasm from both the local government and cooperative members set a positive tone for the upcoming days.
The next day, July 16, saw the commencement of practical sessions with a Pre-Registration Seminar for eleven Coconut Farmers Associations/Organizations. Mr. Cristian De Ade, a renowned expert in cooperative principles, delivered a comprehensive overview of cooperativism. His keynote address emphasized the importance of unity and collective action among farmers, providing a strong foundation for the subsequent training sessions.
Day 3, July 17, focused on financial literacy, an area crucial for the sustainability of cooperatives. Ms. Eva Loraine Cataje led a specialized session attended by representatives from 24 cooperatives. The morning began with insights from Mr. Jefhtee Panganiban on the CFIDP Year 3 Implementation, which set the stage for Ms. Cataje’s in-depth exploration of financial management principles tailored to cooperative needs. This session was integral in equipping participants with the knowledge to manage their financial resources effectively.
The fourth day, July 18, built upon the previous day’s training with a continued focus on financial management. Ms. Cataje engaged with the cooperative representatives in practical discussions aimed at enhancing financial transparency and efficiency. The active participation of the attendees reflected their commitment to applying best practices in their cooperative operations.
On Day 5, July 19, Ms. Helen Servaňez led a comprehensive review of the financial management practices implemented by the cooperatives. This session provided a platform for cooperative leaders to showcase their progress and achievements. A notable highlight of the day was the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) that established the Koop Kapatid Partnership—a strategic alliance between a larger cooperative and a smaller one. This partnership exemplified the spirit of cooperative solidarity and mutual support. The day concluded with a graduation ceremony, where participants were honored for their dedication and awarded certificates recognizing their commitment to financial governance.
As the week came to a close on July 20, the CFIDP team and local cooperatives bid farewell to Romblon Province. The week’s activities left participants with a profound sense of empowerment, having gained new skills and insights that they were eager to implement. The impact of the week’s engagements was evident, promising a more robust future for cooperative enterprises in Romblon.
