The 20th Coop Summit for South-West Leyte unfolded in vibrant colors on October 19, 2024 , bringing together cooperative members, leaders, and partners in a grand celebration of cooperation, unity, and shared growth. Held at the Maasin City Gym, this much-awaited event highlighted the significance of the cooperative movement in empowering communities and fostering collaboration in the region. The day began early, with eager participants arriving as early as 6:30 AM, setting the tone for a lively and engaging event. The summit officially opened with a solemn Holy Mass at 7:30 AM, reminding everyone of the core values of faith and community that form the foundation of the cooperative spirit. After the mass, the energy rose as the attendees participated in the FunWalk Parade at 8:45 AM, creating a festive atmosphere with colorful banners and enthusiastic participants representing various cooperatives.
This was followed by the Banner Raising Contest, showcasing the creativity and pride of each cooperative, set against the backdrop of the majestic Maasin City. The morning ceremonies included the singing of the National Anthem and the recitation of the Coop Pledge, a reminder of the enduring commitment to the principles of cooperatives. A vibrant VICTO Dance further enlivened the crowd, celebrating cultural heritage and unity. Distinguished guests graced the event to deliver inspiring messages. Edna P. Dator, Chairperson of SLEMCOOP, opened with heartfelt welcome remarks, setting a warm and inclusive tone for the summit. This was followed by a message from Ninnoh Rechie K. Demegillo of the VICTO National Regional Board, who emphasized the critical role of cooperatives in driving regional development. Adding depth to the summit’s discussions, Venus M. Jornales, Director III of the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) Region VIII, shared insights on the importance of regulatory support for cooperatives. The morning session ended with an inspirational Message from Hon. Luz V. Mercado, Representative of the 1st District of Southern Leyte, further highlighted the potential of cooperatives in transforming local economies. After a brief lunch break, the afternoon session was filled with excitement and entertainment. The crowd was treated to a thrilling Kuratcha Dance Contest, where dancers showed off their skills in this traditional folk dance. Then, it was time for the younger generation to take the stage during the HIPHOP Dance Contest, proving that cooperatives are not just about businessโthey are also about fostering creativity and fun. The festivities continued with Parlor Games, adding laughter and friendly competition to the day, while participants eagerly awaited the Raffle Draw, hoping to win exciting prizes. One of the most anticipated moments of the day was the Kuratsa King & Queen Coronation, where the best dancers were crowned, symbolizing not just their talent but also the joy of cooperation and cultural preservation. As the event drew to a close, the highlight of the afternoon was the Awarding Ceremony, recognizing cooperatives that have excelled in various areas of development and community engagement.
The event also saw the symbolic Turn Over to the 2026 Host, Sogod By Area, marking the continuation of this annual tradition, with hopes that it will grow even bigger and more meaningful in the years to come. The summit concluded with Closing Remarks by Mario Eugene C. Abenio, General Manager of SLEMCOOP, who thanked everyone for their participation and reminded them of the ongoing journey toward strengthening the cooperative movement.
