Advocating for Change: A Legal Perspective on Women’s Rights

In celebration of Women’s Month, the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) Region VIII Extension Office held a virtual forum titled “Advocating for Change: A Legal Perspective on Women’s Rights” on March 12, 2025 via zoom platform. The forum gathered cooperative members and officers from the region, all eager to deepen their understanding of key laws that safeguard and empower women. The discussion covered key legislation, including the Women in Development and Nation Building Act (RA 7192), the Anti-Violence Against  Women and Their Children Act (RA 9262), the Magna Carta of Women (RA 9710), and the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act (RA 7877). In addition to these legal provisions, the forum highlighted the history of women’s involvement in cooperative development and the significance of CDA Memorandum Circular 2013-22 in promoting gender equality.

The participants actively engaged in discussions, particularly on the vital role of women in the family and society, emphasizing that their contributions extend beyond household responsibilities. Key issues such as child support and the rights of married women, including spousal support, were thoroughly explored, fostering a deeper understanding of legal protections and gender equality. Their active participation and insightful contributions highlighted a strong commitment to advancing women’s empowerment. The enthusiasm they demonstrated throughout the session, remaining engaged until the very end, reflected a collective dedication to promoting women’s rights and fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. Through initiatives like this, CDA Region VIII continues to advocate for legal awareness and gender equality within the cooperative sector.
