Navigating Harmony Towards Growth: Empowering Coconut Cooperatives Through Conflict Management Training

by LYDITT ISSA B. GALBAN, Administrative Assistant II/ Legal Staff

From October 7 to 9, 2024, the CDA Region VIII Extension Office, headed by Dir. Venus M. Jornales, through its Legal Section, hosted a pivotal training session for cooperative officers under the Capacity Building Programs for Coconut Farmer Cooperatives (CFCs). This initiative, entitled “Conflict Management Training for Cooperative Mediation Practitioners: Empowering the Cooperatives in Implementing Mediation-Conciliation,” aims to address a pressing issue within inter and intracooperative conflicts that hinder developmental activities.

Intra-cooperative conflicts are common but can severely disrupt operations. When cooperative officers lack the skills to effectively resolve these disputes, conflicts can escalate, often necessitating intervention from higher authorities and other concerned institutions. This not only prolongs disputes but can also paralyze the cooperative’s functions, diverting focus from essential developmental initiatives.

Recognizing these challenges, the CDA, through the Coconut Farmers Industry Development Program (CFIDP), organized this training to equip cooperative officers with the necessary skills to facilitate conflict resolution. The program emphasizes the importance of mediation and conciliation, aiming to foster a collaborative environment where members can work together harmoniously.

Leading the training alongside Region VIII personnel was Atty. Kenny Junce Altubar from the Caraga Region, an accredited trainer with extensive experience in cooperative mediation. Participants from different parts of the region engaged in practical exercises and discussions designed to enhance their conflict management capabilities, enabling them to better address and resolve issues within their cooperatives. By empowering the cooperative officers with these essential skills, the CDA aims to promote a culture of peace and collaboration, allowing cooperatives to redirect their efforts toward growth and development in the coconut industry. This initiative marks a significant step in strengthening the foundations of coconut farmer cooperatives, ensuring they can thrive amidst challenges.
