The Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) Region VIII has successfully launched the “Provincial Orientations on the Pilot Implementation of the Framework on Strengthening the Philippine Agricultural Cooperatives Ecosystem.” This initiative is a critical step towards empowering agricultural cooperatives to play a more substantial role in the country’s agricultural development and food security.
In line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive, this program focuses on accelerating the consolidation of agricultural cooperatives and enhancing the value chain approach. The orientation aimed to equip cooperative leaders, Local Government Units (LGUs), National Government Agencies (NGAs) and key stakeholders with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the evolving agricultural landscape. This initiative underscores the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders in identifying resources, strategies, and best practices that will ensure the sustainability and growth of agricultural cooperatives. During the orientation, participants were engaged in discussions on the challenges facing the agricultural sector and the opportunities available through the various programs and services by national government agencies and cooperative consolidation. The CDA Region VIII Extension Office spearheaded the activity, ensuring that the framework for strengthening agricultural cooperatives is tailored to the specific needs, context and realities of each province.
A key highlight of the orientation in Leyte Province was the formation of a Technical Working Group (TWG), specifically tasked with driving the implementation of the framework at the provincial level. The TWG will play a pivotal role in coordinating efforts, identifying resources, and developing strategies tailored to the unique agricultural landscape of Leyte. In a strong show of commitment, stakeholders signed a Agri Ecosystem Declaration in Region 8 as a Manifesto of Strong Commitment and Support to the initiative. This declaration symbolizes a unified effort among cooperative leaders, local government units, and other key stakeholders to work collaboratively towards a more resilient and sustainable agricultural cooperative ecosystem.
The initiative has been met with positive feedback, with many participants expressing optimism about the potential of a more unified and robust cooperative system. By fostering stronger cooperative networks, the CDA aims to boost the productivity and competitiveness of Filipino farmers, ultimately contributing to the nation’s food security and agricultural sustainability. This provincial orientation marks the beginning of a broader effort to enhance the role of agricultural cooperatives in the national economy. The CDA Region VIII remains committed to supporting these cooperatives as they adapt to modern challenges and seize new opportunities in the agricultural sector.
