ZAMBOANGA CITY | In a significant step towards empowering local communities, barangay officials from Culianan, Zamboanga City, have recently attended a comprehensive Pre-Registration Seminar (PRS) on Cooperatives last May 14, 2024 held at their Session Hall. The seminar, organized by the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA), aimed to educate and prepare the officials for the establishment and management of cooperatives within their respective barangays.
The event saw a robust turnout, with officials expressing keen interest in the cooperative model as a means to foster economic development and social progress. The seminar covered a range of topics, including reasons for PRS, why cooperative, cooperative as a social and business enterprise, organizational structure and management, allocation and distribution of net surplus, organization and registration of cooperative, and the benefits of cooperatives enterprises to the community.
Participants were provided with resources and tools to navigate the registration process through e-CoopRIS (electronic cooperative registration information system), ensuring that the formation of new cooperatives complies with national standards, rules and regulations. The seminar also highlighted success stories of cooperatives in the regions, serving as an inspiration for the barangay officials.
The initiative is a part of a broader effort to promote the cooperative movement in the in the region, recognizing its potential to contribute to poverty alleviation and sustainable development. With the knowledge gained from the seminar, barangay officials are now better equipped to lead their communities in establishing cooperatives that can provide employment, improve access to services, and enhance the quality of life for their constituents.
The CDA has pledged ongoing support for the barangay officials, offering guidance and assistance as they embark on this transformative journey. The seminar has laid the groundwork for a future where cooperatives play a pivotal role in the economic landscape of Barangay Culianan, Zamboanga City and beyond.
As the barangay officials return to their communities, they carry with them not only the practical knowledge but also a renewed sense of purpose to drive positive change through the power of cooperativism.
