Malubal, RT Lim, Zamboanga Sibugay – July 17, 2023 – In a significant step towards strengthening cooperative operations in the region, the Cooperative Development Authority IX, led by Regional Director Ruben L. Cunanan, JD, organized a Merger and Consolidation Orientation. The event, held at Malubal, RT Lim, was attended by members and representatives of the Zamboanga Sibugay General Merchandise Consumers Cooperative, Malubal Immaculate Concepcion Consumers Cooperative, and Tiling Mauswagon Consumers Cooperative.
This orientation aimed to consolidate the cooperatives’ strengths and augment their capacities to better serve their members. By merging and consolidating, these cooperatives aim to enhance operational efficiency, expand their reach, and improve services.
Ruben L. Cunanan, JD, Regional Director, kicked off the program with an Overview. He underscored the importance of the merger and consolidation initiative, emphasizing how the combined resources and capabilities of the cooperatives would lead to more robust and sustainable operations. Director Cunanan’s speech highlighted the potential benefits for cooperative members and the broader community, setting a positive tone for the day.
Following the overview, Rosylie S. Balungcas, Cooperatives Development Specialist II, discussed the Special Program for Merger and Consolidation (Memorandum Circular 2023-18). Her presentation covered the specifics of the program, including the legal and procedural aspects of merging cooperatives, the steps involved, and the challenges to anticipate. Ms. Balungcas also shared successful case studies of merged cooperatives, providing attendees with real-world examples of positive outcomes.
The final topic, Documentary Requirements, was addressed by Nursalim L. Simpal. Mr. Simpal detailed the necessary documentation and regulatory compliance required for the merger process. His explanation ensured that the cooperative representatives were well-informed about the administrative requirements, making the path to consolidation clearer and more manageable.
Attendees expressed their gratitude for the insightful presentations and the thorough guidance provided by the CDA IX team. Leaders of the three cooperatives acknowledged the importance of the orientation in helping them understand the merger process and its potential impact on their operations.
