Our Taguig Cooperative Development Office joins the whole Taguig City Cooperatives and the global coop movement in celebrating the International Day of Cooperatives tomorrow, July 1, 2023.
Since 1923, the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA)and the whole world coop movement has been celebrating this every first Saturday of July of every year, and the same celebration was reinforced by the United Nations when it passed a UN Assembly Resolution in 1995. This year marks the 101st celebration of the International Day of Cooperatives with the slogan: “Cooperatives for Sustainable Development”.
The celebration calls for greater promotion of the universal Cooperative Identity and the upholding of the Seven Universal Cooperative Principles of Voluntary and Open Membership, Democratic Member Control, Member Economic Participation, Autonomy and Independence, Education, Training, and Information, Cooperation among Cooperatives, and Concern for Community. It also a calls for every cooperative leaders to live up to the universal Cooperative Values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity, and solidarity. And in creating a genuine cooperative culture, leaders must instill in their members the coop ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others.
This celebration is also an occasion to advocate on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global sustainable development issues and to celebrate and reinforce the achievements of cooperatives contributions in their respective communities.
